Should digital editors use software to perfect models?
- Yes
- No
In the glossy world of magazines, it is common to use a variety of photo editors to remove model’s body and face imperfections. According to the fashion stereotype, there are ideal model parameters: starting with a hair and skin condition and ending with the body measurements. If her body differs from perfection, usually Adobe Photoshop (or other similar software) which is capable of creating visual miracles, comes to the rescue. Even if the model gained extra pounds or the state of her skin leaves much to be desired, this is not a problem in the world of modern technology. Thanks to the photo editor, the person is transformed into the standard of beauty which one wants to admire.
While the retouch can be minimal and almost invisible, it may also easily cross the line of naturalness. In addition, there is a concept of natural beauty, which applies not only to the models from magazine covers but also to every woman. Moreover, the use of photo editors causes the phenomenon of distorted reality, when a person in real life and a person on the photo looks differently, sometimes – like two different people. In this case, we are looking at people who, in essence, do not exist. That is if the magazines did not use photo editors, we would see the natural beauty of the model.
