In the modern world, adopting a child gradually becomes an honorary and even fashionable affair, given that more and more people simply cannot have biological children. This is especially true for those people whose financial situation allows them to provide all the needs of the child without any problems.
It is often the case that such people are not deprived of the opportunity to have their own children, but for one reason or another, they seek to help children who don’t have parental attention and care to feel happy as a part of a particular family. Imagine that you are just such a person: you earn well, and you can guarantee a carefree life for children. Would you take a kid from an orphanage in this case?
Of course, such a solution is very difficult for couples. However, adopting a child means getting an opportunity to feel like parents and direct your parents’ aspirations to care for and upbringing of the child. If you cannot have your own child, then adoption is one of the best ways to hear the cherished word “mom” or “daddy.”
For rich people, adoption is often a manifestation of altruism, which positively affects the support of their image. By the way, the children from the orphanage will be grateful to you for the love they have received and for the chance to realize themselves.
However, there are people who for one reason or another do not agree to such a move. Among the reasons is the fear that a child has a genetic disorder that was passed on from biological parents. In addition, some will never be able to accept a child as a native person, from a psychological point of view. In this case, your attitude to upbringing can be a decisive argument, for example, if you are not sure that you can love, care for a child, etc. Another reason may be the reluctance to constantly see at home representatives of government bodies that will monitor and verify you.
So, could you adopt children if you had sufficient finances?
Due to environmental problems, more and more women and men learn about their infertility. In a situation where you want to have a baby, but physically you do not have such an opportunity, surrogacy is one of the ways of salvation, though it is surrounded by great controversies.
Say, imagine that you found out about your infertility. What will you do in this case? Will you be able to accept such a decisive step as surrogate motherhood? Undoubtedly, the key argument in favor of surrogate motherhood is that for many childless couples it is perhaps the only chance to have a child.
Not only super-rich can choose this option because even a relative or a friend can play the role of a surrogate mother, in which case the whole program will not be much more expensive than normal pregnancy. Also, the emergence of maternal feelings in the biological mother is not directly related to whether she gave birth or not. But, as a rule, those who turn to a surrogate mother, have for many years unsuccessfully tried to become parents in a natural way, have long been waiting and already love their future baby.
However, not all people will agree to conceive a child in this way. In particular, opponents of surrogate motherhood emphasize the fact that the need to give up the child seriously injures the psyche of the surrogate mother. Some equate being pregnant with someone else’s baby for money to the sale of children. According to many feminists, surrogate motherhood is the exploitation of a woman, using her as an incubator. Some people believe that a biological mother does not have a special relationship with a child that occurs during pregnancy. Also, surrogate motherhood is unnatural, and the church and traditional morals are against it.
So, would you go for surrogate motherhood if you’d found out about your infertility?
Modern diagnostic methods allow assessing the pathology of fetal development in the early stages of pregnancy. Nevertheless, a significant number of parents, even knowing that the child can be born incurably ill, refuse abortion.
Imagine a situation when you are looking forward to having a child and already love it with all your heart, but the doctor tells you disappointing news about the likelihood of developing a pathology, such as Down syndrome or heart disease. What will you do in such a situation? Will you deliberately decide to give birth or would you opt for an abortion?
Of course, if the child is expected and desirable, then such a diagnosis will cause disappointment and depression in anyone. In this case, the future parents will face a dilemma: either give birth to a child or to do an abortion on medical evidence. Some people categorically reject the second option because abortion is considered a killing. In addition, rarely, but still there are cases of doctors making a mistaken diagnosis.
Also, children with pathologies, regardless of their intelligence, may well be happy if they’re given the chance to be born and live in a family where this child is loved and cared for.
Yet, if a couple decides on the birth of a child with possible pathologies, they need to be ready for challenges on behalf of the society: the circle of friends may shorten, maybe one will have to leave work. In any case, do you have close people who can help in a difficult situation?
Some believe that it is wiser to stop pregnancy in such a situation because to give birth to a child with pathologies means to devote all your life. Only this will not bring happiness, and such a child will be unhappy. And what if suddenly something happens to you, and the child will not be needed by anyone? Therefore, some people decide to play safe – and go for an abortion.
So, if you knew during your pregnancy that the child might be born with certain physical or mental disabilities, what would you do?
